Johnny was 5' 9" tall, weighed 150 pounds, had black hair, brown eyes and a smile that would melt ice cubes at 100 paces. He was a real friend to many and he never forgot the people who were nice to him "back when". He noticed the sincerity of the smile when he met people and listed Bob Hope as his favorite comedian and Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby as favorite singers.

Time Magazine wrote that Johnny had 11 million G.I. fans during the war, so one day Johnny went to a rehearsal with the magazine folded under his arm. Glenn Miller spotted it and asked if he could read it. After he had finished, Glenn asked Johnny if he knew the reason why he was the favourite singer of so many G.I. fans. So Johnny said it was because he sang with the Glenn Miller orchestra and because everyone loved Glenn Miller and his music, they liked Johnny too.

Glenn replied, "That's part of the reason, do you want to know the rest?"

So Johnny said, "Yes, sir."

Then Glenn said, "Its because you're the only guy singing in this war!"

Johnny had been due to record an album with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in late 1985 but very sadly he died before he was able to.  He died of cancer at the age of 65 on September 6th. 1985 at the Cedars Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles.
Johnny Desmond was buried on September 11th 1985 at Holy Cross cemetery, Culver City. He was survived by his wife Ruth and daughters Patti and Diane.

Sadly Ruth died on Thursday 30th, July 1998 aged 78 years and was buried in Salt Lake City.

As you can see from the photographs, Johnny Desmond was a very handsome man and had a lovely, sensitive style of singing.  He will always be my very favourite singer.
